On Saturday, January 4, 2014, deputies from the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station responded to Charter Court in Palmdale, to investigate a report of a missing person.

While gathering information for the report, deputies learned that on Wednesday, December 25, 2013, the female victim (age-19 and resident at the location) was allegedly assaulted and taken against her will by her boyfriend, who is also the father of her child.

The victim's mother apparently witnessed the assault and kidnapping, but did not call police because she was in fear of the suspect, who had reportedly threatened harm to her daughter and the child. It wasn't until the victim’s father drove to the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station on Saturday, January 4, 2014, from the City of Compton, to report his daughter missing that the crime was made known.

Deputies from the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station began an immediate investigation and ascertained information about the suspect. The investigation led them to an address in the 1100 block of East Avenue Q-4, Palmdale. They believed the suspect may have been holding the victim inside the location.

While checking the location, deputies were able to contact the suspect and detain him while they resumed their investigation. Deputies successfully located and rescued the victim from inside an apartment at the location.

When the deputies found the victim, she was hidden inside the apartment and appeared extremely fearful.

The suspect has been identified as Giovanni McKinnis, M/19, resident of Palmdale. He was arrested and booked at the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station on a number of felony charges, including attempted murder, kidnapping, domestic violence, domestic violence restraining order violation, and false imprisonment. McKinnis is being held in lieu of $100,000.00 bail.
